National Essay Competition
In June 2006, NLI held the first NLI National Essay Competition with a theme on values-based society and leadership. The competition was open to Nigerians everywhere and the respondents were asked to write about the essential values a good Nigerian society should be built on and how these values should be embedded in our society. They were also asked to name a present day Nigerian who they would describe as a values-based leader and why.
A diverse range of essay entries was received and in December 2006, NLI released a report on the competition titled Our Shared Values. Whilst being an aggregate analysis of the views of all essay respondents, Our Shared Values also contains articles from various sector leaders on how their various sectors can help to incorporate values into the Nigerian society. Copies of our shared values can be requested by emailing NLI.
The Winners of the Essay Competition are:
First Prize – Felix Ekpang Akombi, who won a cash prize of N250,000 and had his winning entry published in the THISDAY Newspaper edition of December 11, 2006.
Second Prize – Kenneth Uche Ohaeri, who won a cash prize of N150,000
Third Prize – Olubunmi Fakunle, who won a cash prize of N100,000.
Notes2Note History DVD
This is an animated DVD on the history of Nigeria and values , using Naira notes as illustration. The Naira notes explain the importance of values over financial gain and emphasise the values embodied by the founding fathers.
The narration for the 30 minute documentary was performed by the following Nigerian celebrities: MI, Kate Henshaw-Nuttal, BOUQUI, TY Bello, Aisha Augie, Omawumi, RoofTop MCs, C-Flow and Sasha.
The project will launch with a video premiere screening at a Lagos cinema to generate awareness. Transportation will be provided for invited local secondary school students. NLI will then organize DVD screenings at 25 secondary schools nationally. This will be followed by an online distribution campaign using websites, social networks and online videos.

Wordslam Competition
To celebrate Nigeria’s 50th Anniversary, young Nigerians aged 10 to 16 are being asked to develop spoken word pieces, using 4 of NLI’s 10 values. The best 10 entries will be published. The writer of the best piece will have the opportunity to work with some of Nigeria’s biggest artists, and have their words produced into a song. We are proud to have the following artistes on board: MI, BOUQUI, TY Bello, Omawumi, RoofTop MCs and Dare-Art Alade.

C.L.E.V.E.R Clubs
CLEVER stands for Character, Leadership, Education, Values, Effort and Results. NLI hopes to set up Clever Clubs (focused on values & education) in secondary schools.
Student Prefects, Teachers and Principals will be trained by NLI. They will then be equipped with a Clever Club programme and lessons. The Clubs will motivate students to perform well in exams and also pursue community projects.
School Debate Competition
NLI is working with School Education Boards to implement a School Debate Competition. The aim of the competition is to encourage the development of values and patriotism amongst secondary schools through interaction and discussions. NLI has selected the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) as a pilot for the implementation of the Debate Competition, which is supported by Stanbic IBTC Bank Plc.
ReNigeria
The ReNigeria project is a web and mobile phone based campaign. It seeks to mobilise 1 million Nigerians to make specific promises towards changing Nigeria for the better. It will be launched during Nigeria’s golden jubilee in 2010.
Cartoon Series
Cartoon characters (Naije, Nailo and Shongba) have been developed to deliver the message of values to the youth. The characters will be turned into instantly recognisable icons which can be used in NLI communication. Weekly cartoon strips in key newspapers are planned. The project will also evolve into a book that will be distributed in schools.
Radio Campaign
NLI ran a radio campaign on the top ten values that were identified by Nigerians in NLI’s Essay Competition as the essential values for the future development of Nigeria. Notable and credible Nigerian leaders and future leaders spoke about each value on Cool FM and Wazobia FM.
